Kylie's Bag of Love
After beating cancer the first time, Kylie asked for a sewing machine for Christmas 2015 and starting sewing bags for her family members. She came to us and said, “I’ve got it…I want to make bags for the kids at the hospital and fill them with fun toys, projects, animals, journals, etc. We’ll call them Kylie’s Bags of Love!” So, the project was born but two months later Kylie’s cancer, unfortunately, came back. This didn’t stop her. She was more determined than ever to get these bags made, filled, and delivered to the children at the hospital. Because she was spending so much time there, the first dozen bags she made was for specific patients on the Oncology floor. She personally delivered those bags to the patients’ rooms. Once we wrote about what she was doing on her Caring Bridge site, it was unbelievable how many people wanted to help. Family, friends, schools, neighbors, strangers were collecting items that would be used to stuff the bags, and generous women and their kids were volunteering to sew bags.
We are happy to report that as of February 2024, we’ve donated 5000 Bags of Love to the hospital. We would like to thank Arrowhead Primary School, Herberich Elementary School, and Fairlawn Village Preschool (the staff, the students, and the families), Pinnacle Gymnastics, and Blue Storm Athletes for all of their donations. Other groups that have donated materials and stuffed bags are: Copley High School Girls Soccer Team, Highland Elementary School-Girl Scout Troop, Revere High School, Bath United Church of Christ, as well as family and other friends.
None of these bags would be possible without Kylie Jacobs, Debbie Cooperider, Lauren and Katie Wiebe, and the entire Saturday-afternoon sewing group at Bath United Church of Christ, and many others. If you are interested in helping with sewing efforts, please contact us. Also, we are always willing to accept monetary donations to help fund the materials, or you can shop for and donate items!
Last year, and again this year, we will be providing more than 400 bags to stuff at the 5K event. Please bring materials to help stuff these bags.
